Freaky Pug PR

After a fantastic review from Green Man Music, here comes another one, courtesy of Freaky Pug PR!

Unsigned interview spot

"With a vocal that should be gracing the biggest stages the world has to offer, Anna Neale shows a flawless talent with the potential to be unstoppable. The songs ‘Fire’ from the album ‘River Man’ and ‘Soul Momma’ taken from ‘Handle with care’ show a range of musical direction and versatility that would put many top recording artists to shame.

Divine vocals, amazing talent and beauty to boot."

Green Man Music Review

Another stunning review, huge thanks to Dave Franklin, glad so many of you are enjoying 'River Man'!

River Man – Anna Neale

An acoustic guitar driven concept album about the lives of those living in and around Pompeii, incorporating Roman literature and Islamic religious text? Any takers? After such an opening salvo of a description you would expect to find yourself running a mile from some earnest prog-fest or twee hippydom’s flaky sentiments and rightly so. But it doesn’t have to be this way and thankfully the artist in question, Anna Neale, not only pulls the concept off but does so with grace and more importantly accessibility.

Okay, maybe the term concept album is me being deliberately rhetorical, a better term might be an album of concepts relating to the human condition and explored through a certain time and place but still of a universal nature. Love, life, loss and all that sort of thing. Behind the pre-Raphaelite imagery of the cover is a collection of well-crafted and well-balanced songs that run from the earthy and tribal vibe of the title track through gentle guitar ballads (Light – a Who Knows Where The Time Goes for the 21st Century?) and arabesques (All of This) to the pop-accessible (Everything) frantic acoustic rock (False Consciousness) and even slow-burning anthems (Fire.)

And as good as the songs themselves are it is the treatment and Jez Larder’s production of them that really drives the album into the end-zone (pardon the sports metaphor). More noticeable on some of the more reflective moments on the album, it is the string washes that form a sumptuous backdrop and the smooth Danny Thompson-esque bass lines that dance sultrily behind the melody that really hits home. That’s not to say the more direct song elements, such as the guitars and various keyboardary (it’s a word) have anything to worry about, but often the devil is in the detail.

On top of all the instrumentation Anna’s voice is a wonderfully versatile instrument in it’s own right, swooning delicately, offering wistful tones and following the albums marvellous dynamic shifts to deliver full on stadium style euphoria as required, again listen to Fire for the full range of her vocal prowess. Stunning!

And after talking about how good the overall product is, lets just reel things back to basics and point out that underneath all the wonderful enhancements and extra players that the studio allows you to indulge in, lets not forget that these are cracking acoustic songs in their own right and it’s easy to see that even if you have to strip things back, as the costs and logistics of being on the road often demand, you still have a set of songs that would easily stand their ground alongside comparable peers of the genre, artists such as Suzanne Vega or  K T Tunstall.

Tour Plans

Hi all,

Things have been a little manic my way the last couple of weeks (due to move house, had it almost all tied up, then our buyer pulled out so back to square one with a lot more stress!!) but I'm pleased to announce that plans are fully underway for a full band tour to promote River Man in March next year. We're also planning to finish the River Man video in March (funds permitting!).

There are a couple of warm up gigs end of November in London and December in Winchester and Guildford. I'll be doing these with my soon to be 'tour buddy' Nick Tann. Please see the gigs page for more info.

If you have any suggestions for venues or would like us to visit you then let us know, always open to suggestions!

First Review!

River Man has had it's first review from the lovely Artree Music! Check it out below! x

Album Review: Anna Neale - River Man

Anna Neale

River Man is the latest album from Anna Neale, the album is based on a Italian theme inspired by the people who lived in and by the ancient city of Pompeii, Anna’s writing reflects the experiences of those who lived in the town and manages to combine a contemporary lyric with a more traditional rhyme.  The album is a mix of laid back melodies interspersed  by some notable rousing  tracks such as “Fire”, which builds from it’s initial gentle intro to a memorable “stick in your mind” chorus lyric, while Hungry ghosts paints a picture of times gone by and people who are no more.

Anna, a singer songwriter has a voice that compliments her musical style which makes for a pleasant listening experience, however, don’t be fooled by Anna’s quiet reflective tones when the time is right and the occasion requires it, she is able to summon up a more powerful side to her voice which remains both clear and concise and an overall accomplished sound.   There are a few surprises on this album, one track for instance features a haunting introduction taken form an Islamic prayer while in other tracks you will find Anna is accompanied by some notable musicians from bands such as Procol Harum amongst others.   All this makes for an album that is both easy to listen to and inspiring, ideal if you want to relax and unwind after a hard day or just want to indulge yourself for a while with some fine original musical talent.

Fest On Zenson

Just under two weeks ago I did my first Italian gig in the village of Zenson Di Piave near Treviso for their festival 'Fest On Zenson'. What a phenomenal response! The crowd were wonderful and even applauded my rather poor Italian! I have to say it's one of the best shows I've played this year.

I'd like to thank everyone who came down to watch, and to NGZ who have one of the best stage crews I've ever worked with (I'm taking your sound guy on tour with me.......).

Videos from the gig are now up on You Tube here: www.youtube.com/annaneale

River Man Video Scouting

River Man location #1
Last week we started filming the video for Fily's Prayer and River Man. We spent what was possibly the hottest day of the year in a wheat field moving hay bales out of shot (not authentic enough these days!) and sheltering under a gazebo from the burning sun! Roman dress is, despite what you think, not very cool......On the plus side the light was a beautiful golden glow which was perfect for our 'reminisant' shots and we got some amazing footage. Even the children behaved themselves. Well worth the sun burn.

Scouting River Man location #2

This Sunday the director and I headed down to Botany Bay in Kent to scout out location number 2, our 'entrance to the underworld'. What a fantastic landscape! There's some amazing little coves and rock formations which will look stunning with all our mad ideas! It was also a lovely day out for the family, lets just hope it's not too cold in October!!

Olympic Appendix

Quite an appt title really considering! This year is certainly turning into a challenging one! Just as I've  recovered from the c section, my appendix (literally) blew up on me on Sunday night (double ouch, very horrible nasty ouch!). I'm now pleased to announce that the offending organ has been removed and I'm yet again, on the road to recovery (it's a shame I'm not really a sports fan, TV schedule is looking a bit bland to my eyes!)! Unfortunately this means they be a bit more of a delay in me fully being back on stage (please note the gig cancellations in August) and it also means we're having to postpone the River Man video to late September early October.  There is a notion that "things happen for a reason" (it had better be a good one!). Hopefully filming in October will add to the 'air of mystery' we're hoping for.
In other, better news, I now have the final artwork and the final edit of the mastered version of the album so we can move forward in an audio sense. It's sounding fab and I can't wait for you all to hear it very soon.

Ladies & Gentlemen....

I have, in my hands, the final mixes for the new album 'River Man'!

A huge thank you to Jez who's spent hours perfecting everything and missed out on the recent bought of hot weather we've been having! I'm currently sorting out the track listing before we head to the mastering studio on the 15th June.

So far it sounds amazing and I'm incredibly proud and thankful to everyone who's been involved in the journey so far. To celebrate I've posted a collage that will appear in the artwork so you can see what we've been up to!

A sneak preview of the new album

Hi all,

I've posted a little video up from the one of the studio sessions with Jali Fily Cissokho on a new You Tube channel that will feature stuff from the new album:

Nearly there.....

Well folks, I'm pleased to announce that we're nearly there with the final mixes!

On Tuesday I took a four week old Jessica in the studio with me to do a run through and listening session. While there Jez and I tidied things up and re did bits here and there (complete with baby in the vocal booth!). We've narrowed it down to 11 tracks, with 2 interludes, and are currently working on the track listing, with a vinyl edition in mind.

We've still got a little bit of work to do on one or two tracks, but fingers crossed, if we're happy with all the levels and sounds the album will be going to the mastering phase at the end of this month!

Having listened to the album so far, I have to say I'm incredibly pleased with it. We've been working very hard to make sure that every song counts and tells a relevant story, to create an actual 'album'. Something almost harking back to the late 80's/1990's. I can't wait to preview it to you.

Introducing baby Jessica

Hi all,
I thought you might like to know that we welcomed little baby Jessica into our family on the 9th March! It's been a bit like a whirlwind ever since she's arrived (in a good way, apart from the sleep deprivation obviously!) but we're almost starting to gain some semblance of normality back! Above is a picture of the new arrival for you to enjoy! :)

Changes are afoot!

Hi folks,

With one week to go until D Day for baby #2, I'm still busy working away on my laptop. I've been rather confined the last few days as I'm now on cruthes (??!!), but not long to go now!!

If you head on over to the official Facebook page you'll notice a couple of changes there leading to the new album
With the new Timeline coming into being I thought it might be time to start the updating, even if we do have a while to go!

One the album front, Jez will be spending much of March mixing. I'm pretty excited and can't wait to get back into the studio by the end of March to re evaluate everything.

I've also made a start on the goodies for all you wonderful Pledgers out there. I've dug out my Calligraphy pens and have been re-learning the Roman script, and I have to say, they're looking lovely so far.

More plans are under way to get some locations sorted for the 'River Man' video. All we need now is a nice placid baby and a speedy recovery!!

Monday 30 January 2012

This time last week.....

....We welcomed the wonderful Gary Brooker into the studio to lay down some Piano and Hammond on a couple of tracks for us! Gary is the founding member of the band 'Procol Harum', and wrote the world famous song 'Whiter Shade of Pale'. He's recently played on Kate Bush's last couple of albums, 'Aerial' and 'Director's Cut', so it was a real honour to be able to work with him.
We've now also finally finished all the recording on the new album which will officially be called 'River Man'! The next stage is mixing, which will take a little while as it's where everything is tweaked and levelled out and put into it's final form. Jez will be spending most of Feb locked away in a dark studio doing this! Hopefully this will be complete by the end of March/beginning of April, but will keep you all updated on this, and the new arrival!
